The spokesperson for the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, Firas al-Muslawi, confirmed on Wednesday that there is no political consensus among the Shia, Sunni, and Kurdish blocs regarding the completion of Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s cabinet. Al-Muslawi told Al-Maalomah that “passing the remaining ministerial posts requires parliamentary agreement among the political blocs in the Council of Representatives to proceed with the voting process.”
He added that “the absence of this consensus is reflected in the Council of Representatives’ agenda, as the first session, as well as tomorrow’s session, did not include an item to complete the vote on the vacant ministries in al-Zaidi’s government.”
Al-Muslawi indicated that “the issue of nominating ministers for the vacant portfolios should be resolved within one month,” explaining that this requires further intensive dialogue and ongoing negotiations among the political forces.
The spokesperson for Reconstruction and Development called on the political forces to “expedite the resolution of the cabinet completion issue,” emphasizing that “the continued vacancy of ministerial posts negatively impacts the performance of government institutions, affects the work of ministries, and hinders the provision of services to citizens.”
Nine ministries in Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi’s government remain under acting ministers due to the lack of permanent appointments since the confidence vote session, which was marred by widespread controversy over administrative irregularities. Parliament Speaker Haibat al-Halbousi has been accused of deliberately obstructing the completion of the cabinet, a move his critics say reveals ulterior motives toward certain parliamentary blocs.
