The former MP, Basim al-Gharibawi, asserted on Monday that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is stalling on the issue of handing over its financial entitlements to the federal government, indicating that this constitutes a violation of the constitution.
Al-Gharibawi told Al-Maalomah news agency, “The KRG has not fulfilled its financial obligations to Baghdad, including oil revenues and border crossing fees, due to the laxity of previous governments and political favoritism.” He added, “Erbil is required to pay all its dues to the central government in accordance with the provisions of the country’s constitution.”
Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi called for “exerting pressure on the Kurdistan Regional Government to hand over all its oil and non-oil revenues to Baghdad, in exchange for the region receiving its due payments, including salaries.” He stressed “the need to abandon political niceties and avoid repeating the mistakes of previous governments in dealing with the region.”
Earlier, Mohammed al-Baldawi, spokesperson for the Sadiqun parliamentary bloc, called for a review of the agreements signed between the federal government and the Kurdistan Region, emphasizing the need to adopt the principle of “reciprocity” to ensure revenues are transferred to the federal government.
