The former deputy head of the parliamentary economic committee, Yasser al-Husseini, called on Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi on Monday to open an investigation into corruption within the security ministries, particularly in the area of arms procurement.
Al-Husseini told the Information Agency that “there are numerous cases of corruption within the security institutions, especially in the Ministry of Defense, where many corrupt deals have been made, including those related to arming the army.” He added that “corruption within the security institutions has significantly impacted the performance of the security forces at all levels,” urging al-Zaidi to “launch a campaign similar to the anti-corruption campaign, Operation Dawn, against corrupt politicians.”
Al-Husseini explained that “there are a large number of corruption cases within the security institutions, including those related to contracts and arms procurement, inflated invoices for weapons and military equipment deals, the awarding of contracts at prices exceeding their actual value, and the importation of substandard equipment.”
These calls come as part of demands to purge security institutions of major corruption cases, most notably the “ghost soldiers” phenomenon, suspicions of monopolizing food and supply contracts, as well as cases of administrative extortion and abuse of power, in a crucial step to establish the rule of law and restore public confidence in the country’s defense and security system.
