Oil expert Hamza Al-Jawahiri confirmed today, Sunday, that Iraq must learn the lessons revealed by the recent crises and work to find strategic alternatives for exporting crude oil, in order to ensure that the disruption of exports due to the closure of maritime routes, especially the Strait of Hormuz, is not repeated.
Al-Jawahiri told Al-Maalouma that “the government is required to develop practical and proactive solutions to confront any crisis that may hinder oil exports to global markets, stressing the need to diversify export outlets and mechanisms.”
He added that “one of the most prominent proposed solutions is the establishment of strategic crude oil terminals and storage facilities in both China and India, which would allow the use of the stockpile to meet market needs when direct export from Iraq is not possible due to any regional developments or disruptions in shipping lanes.”
He pointed out that “a number of Gulf countries, most notably Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, have previously established crude oil storage facilities in China and other countries, which has provided them with greater flexibility in dealing with crises and ensuring the stability of supplies.”
Al-Jawahiri pointed out that “there are parties benefiting from the continued export of Iraqi oil via maritime tankers due to the commissions and financial gains they generate,” stressing that “the absence of strategic plans and effective alternatives leaves Iraqi oil exports vulnerable to risks from any regional crisis that might affect shipping or supply chains.”
