Judiciary: Fraudsters exploit Adnan al-Jumaili’s case to extort businessmen

The Iraqi judiciary revealed on Friday the existence of “fraudsters” who are trying to extort businessmen by exploiting the case of the detained Deputy Minister of Oil, Adnan al-Jumaili.
Judge Diaa Jaafar, the investigating judge of the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court, said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that “some fraudulent extortionists from several official and unofficial bodies are trying to exploit the circumstances and course of the investigation into the case of the detained defendant Adnan Muhammad Hamoud Al-Jumaili, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil for Refining Affairs, and his group by contacting businessmen, claiming that their names have been mentioned in the ongoing investigations in order to extort them.”
Jaafar called on all citizens and businessmen in particular “not to believe these lies, not to succumb to any such blackmail, and to report these actions to the court.”
He explained that “recordings and television interviews were monitored on a number of satellite channels in which the guests of the episodes attributed information about the investigations that was entirely incorrect and had no relation to the truth.”
He stressed that “the court will take the strictest legal measures against the perpetrators of these despicable acts and behaviors that attempt to distort the efforts of the judiciary, the government, and the agencies concerned with combating corruption.”
On Sunday, June 28, Judge Diaa Jaafar, the investigating judge of the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court, revealed that investigations with the former Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil for Refining Affairs, Adnan Al-Jumaili, led to the discovery of the involvement of a number of members of the House of Representatives in exploiting state resources for election propaganda and benefiting from government contracts, which resulted in taking legal measures against them and arresting a number of them, while he indicated that legal measures will be taken against political figures and other people during the coming period.
Joint security forces closed the entrances to the Green Zone in Baghdad at dawn on Sunday, coinciding with an “unprecedented” raid and search campaign in several provinces that targeted the homes of MPs, politicians and businessmen, amid reports of legal action against prominent officials in corruption cases.
