Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) member Ghiath al-Surji explained how to resolve the government formation crisis in the Kurdistan Region, noting the importance of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) reassessing its position now that the PUK has the same number of parliamentary seats, or slightly more.
Al-Surji told Al-Maalouma, “The PUK now has the same number of parliamentary seats as the KDP in the region, and this number may increase in the coming days. This has led to a desire within the PUK for the next Kurdistan government to be formed equally between the PUK and the KDP.”
He added, “The PUK insists that the regional government be formed according to electoral merit, meaning that whatever the KDP receives, the PUK should also receive, and the KDP should not monopolize the positions.”
He indicated that “it is best for the KDP to review its calculations and adapt to the current situation, especially since the PUK now has 38 parliamentary seats, a number that could reach 41 through alliances with other parties within the region.”
