The spokesman for the local Anbar government, Muayad al-Dulaimi, confirmed on Thursday that the Cabinet’s decision to include private generators in a free share of gas oil (kerosene) does not include the month of June, but is limited to the months of July and August, in response to the objections and controversy that accompanied the generator pricing for the month of June.
Al-Dulaimi explained to Shafaq News Agency that the Cabinet’s decision did not include turning off generators for four hours, but rather stressed the need for supply hours not to be less than 20 hours a day, noting that there is no area in Anbar Governorate that receives national electricity for less than six hours a day, which requires owners of private generators to comply with the regulations and instructions, and not to resort to deliberate shutdowns in order to avoid legal accountability.
He added that the distribution of the free share of “kerosene” actually began on June 29, noting that the Oil Department needs a period of no less than two weeks to complete the distribution of shares to all generator owners, given its need for more than 32 million liters per month, which is approximately 1.1 million liters per day to cover the needs of private generators in the governorate.
Al-Dulaimi stressed that the ideal solution for regulating the work of private generators is the smart meter installation project, which was directed to be implemented by the Governor of Anbar. He explained that these meters accurately program the operating and shut-off hours for each generator, with data being transferred directly to the control centers in the governorate without human intervention, thus ensuring the adoption of an electronic pricing system that is far removed from the interpretations of popular committees, and achieving transparency and fairness.
He pointed out that the project has been completed in a number of districts, as the percentage of smart meter installation reached 100% in the district of Ana and its sub-districts, as well as in the sub-districts of Al-Muhammadi and Kubaisa, while the percentage of distribution in the city of Ramadi reached 50%, stressing that work will continue to complete equipping all districts of the governorate during the next two months.
Several districts in Anbar province witnessed the shutdown of private generators by their owners in protest against the June pricing, even though a segment of citizens considered that pricing to be high compared to previous months, which sparked a widespread wave of discontent among the residents, coinciding with rising temperatures and an increased need for supplied energy.
