The Reconstruction and Development Coalition, led by former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, confirmed on Wednesday that the latter had proposed a cabinet reshuffle that included a number of ministers, but the political blocs rejected it at the time.
The spokesman for the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, Firas Al-Muslawi, told Shafaq News Agency that “the Sudanese government had previously proposed a cabinet reshuffle that included 6 ministers, but the political blocs rejected the reshuffle at the time, and at the same time referred five ministers to the judiciary, but the circumstances at that time did not provide sufficient political cover to complete the reform process.”
Al-Muslawi added, “The Al-Zaidi government today has a broader political mandate to implement reform, and the Reconstruction and Development Coalition supports investing this political and popular mandate in pursuing corruption in all state institutions, without exception or selectivity, starting with ministers, directors-general, and directors of ministers’ offices, whether former or current, in a way that ensures the implementation of reform without selectivity, so that the Iraqi judiciary will be the arbiter in resolving those cases.”
Al-Muslawi continued, saying: “During the era of the Sudanese government, a reform campaign was implemented that included the positions of general managers in all government institutions.”
A wave of arrests was launched at dawn last Sunday, targeting political officials, members of parliament, and businessmen as part of an anti-corruption campaign, which Al-Zaydi described during a cabinet meeting as the “first phase” of broader measures to recover public funds, while tasking oversight bodies with receiving any indications related to cases of corruption or negligence in state institutions.
In the same context, the leader of the Shiite National Movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, praised the campaign, describing it as a “heroic reform campaign,” calling for a peaceful demonstration after next Friday’s prayers in support of the government’s measures, and considering that it has restored hope to Iraqis after years of corruption’s dominance.
The Federal Integrity Commission stated that the arrest warrants are being carried out in accordance with the law and under the supervision of the judiciary. According to judicial sources, the investigation data indicates that new files will continue to be opened that may affect other figures in the coming period, as part of efforts to recover public funds and prosecute those involved inside and outside Iraq.
Government sources also confirmed to Shafaq News Agency that the campaign will continue in the coming days, while political assessments indicate that its results may have a wide impact on the balance of power within Parliament and political blocs, especially if the investigations result in judicial convictions and the recovery of large sums of money for the benefit of the state treasury.
