The director of the Iraqi Media Center in Washington, Nizar Haidar, revealed on Wednesday that a financial settlement is being proposed concerning the disclosure and return of movable and immovable assets belonging to officials. He indicated that the discussion revolves around the possibility of returning these funds to the state treasury in exchange for settling the related legal cases.
Haidar told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and the head of the Progress Alliance, Mohammed al-Halbousi, have expressed their readiness to conduct a comprehensive financial settlement that includes disclosing the movable and immovable assets that have ballooned as a result of abuse of power, and returning them to the state treasury.”
He added that “the proposed settlement aims to return the funds to the state and restructure the financial situation of the parties involved,” noting that “the judiciary’s position on this offer is not yet clear, and it is uncertain whether it will be approved or rejected.”
Haidar pointed out that “the judiciary’s rejection of any settlement could open the door to the issuance of arrest warrants if violations are proven,” indicating that “the next phase may witness extensive legal action encompassing multiple cases.”
He added, “There is talk of warrants that may cover a large number of cases related to previous files,” stressing that “the relevant authorities are continuing to pursue corruption cases and recover public funds for the state.”
