On Wednesday, Mustafa Abdullah, head of the Kurdistan Islamic Union bloc, called for the swift reactivation of the Kurdistan Region Parliament to exercise its oversight and legislative role, while simultaneously announcing his bloc’s support for the ongoing anti-corruption campaign launched by the federal government in Baghdad.
Abdullah said during a press conference attended by Shafaq News Agency that his bloc is demanding urgent steps to reactivate Parliament, so that it becomes “a strong parliament that serves the citizens,” noting his support for the initiative of the Secretary-General of the Islamic Union, and confirming that an expanded meeting will be held in the coming days that includes the represented parties to discuss mechanisms for ending the political stalemate.
He added that the Islamic Union supports the campaign to prosecute corrupt individuals and recover public funds that the country is witnessing, expressing his hope that it will be expanded to include all governorates, indicating that his bloc has submitted a number of corruption files to the Federal Integrity Commission, in addition to initiating lawsuits regarding three other files.
He pointed out that the authorities’ attempts to weaken the role of parliament and prevent the accountability of executive bodies have largely succeeded, stressing that his bloc will continue to perform its oversight role, noting in the same context that a lawsuit has been filed to demand a reduction in gasoline prices.
In response to a question about the Islamic Union’s moves regarding the formation of the government, Abdullah explained that his party has a political project aimed at getting the Kurdistan Region out of its current crises, denying that this project is linked to any external agenda, and stressing that the decision was taken independently within the party’s political bureau.
The head of the bloc concluded by saying that “the authorities have become indifferent to the experience of the Kurdistan Region and to the lives of citizens,” calling for the adoption of serious political solutions that would end the deadlock and reactivate the constitutional institutions in the region, as he put it.
