3 billion annually... Al-Lami reveals the gains from stopping the flaring of associated gasInformation/Baghdad…
Former member of the Parliamentary Energy Committee, Ali al-Lami, confirmed on Tuesday that halting the flaring of associated gas in Iraqi oil fields by the end of 2027 is a realistic possibility, noting that this achievement would save the state treasury at least three billion dollars annually.
Al-Lami explained to Al-Maalouma that “efforts to invest in and utilize associated gas in oil fields across nine sites in the south and central Euphrates region are achieving significant progress, especially since the completion rate in some projects has exceeded 70%.”
He added that “efforts are focused on completing the investment in associated gas by the end of 2027, and this is very likely, even though some projects have been affected by recent events, but work continues in this direction.”
Al-Lami pointed out that “utilizing and investing in associated gas in oil fields will save the state treasury at least three billion dollars annually, and this is very important in strengthening the national economy,” explaining that “the gas that is currently being flared can be used to operate power generation plants, in addition to the possibility of exporting the surplus to global markets.”
He affirmed that “investing in associated gas will transform a portion of this wealth into a source of hard currency for the state treasury,” emphasizing “the necessity of utilizing Iraq’s natural gas reserves and converting them into an exportable commodity to meet domestic needs, thereby contributing to diversification of the national economy.”
