Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday that Washington is looking into de-escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine over the coming winter, suggesting the possibility of resuming peace negotiations.
Zelensky told the American website Axios that a trilateral round of negotiations between the United States, Ukraine, and Russia is possible, indicating that this possibility exists and no decision has yet been made.
He added that Ukraine had made all the concessions it could, and that any diplomatic path required security guarantees and economic support.
Zelensky continued: “What we understood from the visit of Trump’s envoys Steve Wittkopf and Jared Kushner is that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to discuss ideas to move the negotiations forward.”
The two US envoys briefed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday, and then representatives of the European trio of Germany, France and Britain, in a separate meeting, on the content of their talks the previous day with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.
Witkov called on Moscow and Kyiv to make “concessions” to find a way out of the conflict that has been raging between them since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2012.
Wittkopf said: “Both sides need to make concessions and narrow their differences, and we believe we have the necessary elements to achieve that.”
He added: “It is extremely difficult, but we have the determination and the interest, and we hope that all of this will lead to a diplomatic solution.”
For his part, Kushner said his country’s delegation was looking forward to making further progress in talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
