On Tuesday, Iraqi Army Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Abdul Amir Rashid Yarallah, stressed the importance of continued coordination, cooperation and integration between the Iraqi armed forces and the Peshmerga forces, emphasizing that they are an integral part of the national defense system.
In a statement issued on the occasion of the announcement of the unification of the Peshmerga forces, and received by Shafaq News Agency, Yarallah said that this step “represents a prominent milestone in the path of unifying military efforts and strengthening the security system in Iraq,” noting that it comes “within a unified institutional framework” and enhances discipline and readiness and consolidates the principle of the unity of the military and security establishment in protecting the homeland and the citizen and confronting various challenges and threats.
He added that the Ministry of Defense affirms “the importance of continued coordination, cooperation and integration between the Iraqi armed forces and the Peshmerga forces, as they are an integral part of the national defense system,” noting that they “proved during the liberation battles that they stood together in defense of the land of Iraq and its people in the face of terrorism.”
Yarallah praised the efforts of the political and military leaders in the Kurdistan Region to unify the Peshmerga forces and develop their capabilities, looking forward to “more cooperation and joint coordination, in a way that serves the higher interests of Iraq and enhances its security and stability.”
The army chief of staff’s statement came after the official announcement on Monday of the unification of the Peshmerga forces under the umbrella of the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs, during a ceremony held at the Kurdistan Region Presidency headquarters in Erbil, under the supervision of the region’s president, Nechirvan Barzani, and in the presence of a number of officials and representatives of the international coalition and diplomatic missions.
