Gold prices fell on Thursday afternoon to $4,562 an ounce, a loss of $333 compared to the opening price, despite continued geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
This sharp decline comes after statements by the US Federal Reserve, in which its chairman, Jerome Powell, affirmed his commitment to a tight monetary policy, keeping interest rates high for a longer period to combat inflation.
According to market observers, these statements pushed the US dollar higher, coinciding with a rise in bond yields, which led to a decline in the appeal of gold as a non-yielding asset.
They pointed out that the rise in oil prices as a result of regional tensions has reinforced fears of increased inflation, which supports the Federal Reserve’s tendency to continue its tight policy, which has negatively affected gold prices, despite it being a safe haven in times of crisis.
They confirmed that the yellow metal is currently under double pressure, between escalating tensions that support it on one hand, and tightening monetary policy and the strength of the dollar on the other, which led to sharp losses during today’s trading.
