Iranian state media said on Friday that the interim leadership council met for the fourth time to discuss the program for selecting the country’s new Supreme Leader .
The official Iranian television channel stated that “the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, participated in the meeting to brief those present on the latest developments .”
She explained that “during the fourth meeting of the interim leadership council, plans were made to hold a meeting of the leadership experts council in order to choose the new leader, in addition to setting a program to announce the future leader .”
According to Article 111 of the Iranian Constitution, in the event of the death, resignation, or dismissal of the Supreme Leader, the Assembly of Experts must choose a new Supreme Leader and announce him as soon as possible .
Until a new Supreme Leader is chosen, a temporary body consisting of the President of the Republic, the head of the judiciary, and a member of the Guardian Council chosen by the Expediency Discernment Council (who must be a jurist) assumes the leadership duties temporarily .
Media reports in recent days have spoken of members of the Assembly of Experts holding an online meeting, and claims have emerged that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has been chosen as the country’s new leader .
US President Donald Trump had indicated that the emergence of Mojtaba Khamenei as the new leader of Iran was “unacceptable “.
Trump added in his remarks, “The most likely successor in Iran is Mojtaba Khamenei, but this is unacceptable. I don’t want an Iranian leader who will continue Khamenei’s policies and force the United States into another war in five years .”
