Winds hit Iraqi electricity. 10 towers collapse and power outages occur in two governoratesShafaq News/ A source in the Iraqi electricity sector reported on Saturday that 10 power transmission towers collapsed in various areas of Nineveh and Salah al-Din governorates, including four between Sharqat district and Qayyarah sub-district, due to a severe windstorm yesterday.

The source told Shafaq News Agency, “A severe windstorm caused 10 power transmission towers to collapse, leading to a power outage in a number of areas in the two governorates.” He indicated that “engineering and technical cadres began diverting the power supply to alternative lines according to a 4-group system.”

He added that “priority in restarting operations will be given to water projects to ensure that water pumping does not stop in the affected areas.”

The source indicated that the four towers that collapsed yesterday were located in an area between Sharqat and Qayyarah, affecting large areas of Nineveh’s electricity grid.

This incident comes amid a violent storm that hit parts of the Kurdistan Region on Friday evening, causing significant material damage. This included the collapse of part of St. Joseph’s Church in the Ankawa area, fires that broke out across approximately 700 acres of agricultural land, trees falling on civilian vehicles, and a number of children being injured when a swing set aground in a neighborhood of the city.

The Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Electricity had previously announced that the storm had caused high-voltage power lines to collapse and power outages in areas of Dohuk and Erbil. It noted that more than 1,000 megawatts of power were lost before central control teams succeeded in partially restoring stability to the electrical system.
