Microsoft has warned users around the world of the increased risk of cyberattacks as support for Windows 10 approaches its end on October 14, ten years after its launch.
The company confirmed that “devices that have not updated to Windows 11 or are not enrolled in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program will be more vulnerable to malware and viruses, as they will no longer receive security updates and technical support.”
“Microsoft will no longer provide security updates, features, or technical support for Windows 10 PCs,” Microsoft executive Yusuf Mehdi said in a blog post. “While the devices will continue to function, they will be more vulnerable to cyber threats.”
According to StatCounter Global Stats, more than 40% of Windows users worldwide still rely on the outdated system, leaving millions of devices at risk of imminent security vulnerability.
“Our research suggests millions of users aren’t ready to stop using Windows 10 next week,” said Lisa Barber, technology editor at Which?. “Ignoring the update could leave them more vulnerable to hacking and cyberattacks.”
Microsoft urged users to “check their device’s eligibility for the free upgrade to Windows 11 via the following path: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.”
Devices that do not meet Windows 11 requirements can enroll in the ESU program, which provides critical security updates for an additional year until October 13, 2026, without any enhancements or technical support.
Mahdi concluded by saying, “Moving to the latest operating system is a natural part of the software lifecycle,” emphasizing that “continuing to use Windows 10 after the specified date may impact application performance and increase cybersecurity risks.”
