US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the attack targeting National Guard troops near the White House on Thanksgiving Day was “a terrorist act against our entire nation,” stressing that the United States “will not allow terrorism to spread within its borders.”
Trump added in remarks made from Florida, where he is spending the Thanksgiving holiday, that “this heinous attack was an act of evil, hatred, and terror, and a crime against our entire nation and against humanity.”
He noted that the suspected shooter was “a foreigner who entered our country from Afghanistan,” calling for a re-examination of all foreigners who entered the United States during President Joe Biden’s administration, and for all necessary measures to be taken “to ensure the removal of anyone who does not belong in this country or add no benefit to it.”
Trump asserted that “America will not bow down and will not surrender to terrorism,” announcing that he had directed the Department of Defense to mobilize an additional 500 soldiers to help strengthen the protection of the capital, Washington, and pledging to bring the perpetrator of the attack to justice “quickly and decisively.”
US media reported on Wednesday that at least two soldiers were injured in a shooting that occurred a few blocks from the White House in the heart of Washington, DC.
ABC News quoted informed sources as saying that the injured service members “may be from the National Guard,” while Washington police confirmed the incident occurred near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, where many White House staff work.
