Iraqi Maritime Transport Company spokesman Talib al-Badri confirmed on Wednesday that drought and falling water levels have affected the operation of moorings and boats. He noted that the company has generated more than $6 million in profits from its vessels since the beginning of the year.
Al-Badri told Shafaq News Agency, “The General Company for Maritime Transport is one of the formations of the Iraqi Ministry of Transport and it owns the Iraqi maritime fleet. We currently have six ships operating in the seas and oceans, transporting goods to and from the country.”
He added, “We have the river section, and there are a number of river boats now in the Shatt al-Arab. There are more than 45 government boats operating in the Shatt al-Arab and in all the governorates. However, the real problem we are facing now is the scarcity of water in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Consequently, this problem has caused us to stop a number of marinas and boats.”
He continued, “The General Maritime Transport Company is one of the most profitable companies over the past four years, and even this year, it has achieved profits of more than $6 million up to this month, due to the operation of its ships.”
He pointed out that “these profits represent a major success for the Ministry of Transport and the Iraqi maritime crews. We have Iraqi crews specializing in maritime work. Iraq had previously faced sanctions due to the economic blockade and wars during the previous regime, which led to Iraq’s decline and its inclusion on the blacklist. However, after 2003, we were able to enter the International Maritime Organization and enter the whitelist.”
