US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Sunday that significant progress had been made in the past 48 hours regarding the Strait of Hormuz crisis, suggesting that “good news” would soon be forthcoming in cooperation with the Gulf states.
Rubio said during a joint press conference with his Indian counterpart in New Delhi that “there is progress on the outlines that may contribute to resolving the Strait of Hormuz crisis,” stressing that “the world may hear good news in the coming hours, especially with regard to the strait.”
The US Secretary of State stressed the need to “ensure freedom of shipping and maritime navigation in the region,” considering that “attacks on commercial vessels in sea lanes are illegal.”
He added that “Iran’s control of the Strait of Hormuz sets an international precedent that we will not allow,” adding: “No country should exploit maritime routes or airspace, and freedom of international navigation must be guaranteed.”
Rubio noted that progress on the crisis with Iran was achieved “in cooperation with the Gulf states,” explaining that “the most important goal is to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.”
Earlier today, Axios revealed that Washington will agree to negotiate the lifting of sanctions and the unfreezing of Iranian funds within a period of 60 days, while the American forces that were deployed during the past months will remain in the region and will not withdraw unless a final agreement is reached.
US President Donald Trump announced late Saturday that a preliminary agreement had been reached with Iran, which includes opening the Strait of Hormuz.
