Sabah Al-Akeili, a member of the Rights Movement, confirmed on Saturday that significant internal and external political pressure was behind the resignation of a number of Federal Court judges, noting that Kuwait had commissioned Washington to pressure the court to reverse its decision to cancel the Khor Abdullah agreement.
Al-Akeili told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “the pressures exerted on the court prompted some judges to submit their resignations,” indicating that “this pressure comes from two directions: internal, led by the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, and some political actors interested in personal interests that include Kuwaiti bribes, and external, including the Kuwaiti lobby, which commissioned Washington to lead the external pressure after the failure of Gulf pressure attempts on the court.”
He added that “the Federal Court represents the primary defender of the Iraqi constitution and laws, and its recent decision to cancel the Khor Abdullah agreement is based on solid legal foundations, as it considered the agreement a clear violation of the constitution and a blatant infringement on Iraqi sovereignty.”
He explained that “the agreement is invalid from the outset because it did not receive a parliamentary consensus and was approved by less than 80 representatives, so the court annulled it because it is unfair to Iraq’s rights.”
Al-Akeili stressed that “the Federal Court will not succumb to these pressures and that it represents a safety valve for the Iraqis,” noting that the honorable Iraqi street will not allow the decision to be reversed in favor of Kuwait, no matter the cost.
It is worth noting that a number of Federal Court judges submitted their resignations earlier after demanding that the decision to cancel the Hawr Abdullah agreement in favor of Kuwait be reversed by circumventing the legal texts.
