US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that the United States will withdraw from dozens of international organizations and UN agencies, including a major climate treaty and a UN body that promotes gender equality and empowers women.
Among the 35 non-UN organizations and 31 UN agencies cited by Trump in a memo to senior administration officials was the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which many describe as the “cornerstone” of the climate treaty that is the parent agreement to the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement.
The United States was absent from the United Nations’ annual international climate summit last year for the first time in three decades.
“The United States will be the first country to withdraw from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change,” said Manish Pabna, president and CEO of the Natural Resources Defense Council.
He explained that “all other countries are members, for reasons including their realization that even if it is not a moral obligation to combat climate change, having a seat at the table of these negotiations gives them the ability to influence economic policies and create enormous opportunities.”
The United States will also withdraw from UN Women, the United Nations body working to achieve gender equality and empower women, and from the United Nations Population Fund, the UN agency specializing in family planning and maternal and child health in more than 150 countries.
The United States had reduced its funding to the United Nations Population Fund last year.
