The US Department of Defense, the Pentagon, announced on Saturday that the United States has decided to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany, in what appears to be an American rebuke to its close NATO ally.
The American move, which followed an attack and dispute between US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in recent days, comes amid a widening rift between Trump and Europe over the Iran war.
The Pentagon explained that the decision comes as part of a broader review of the deployment of military forces outside the country, in line with U.S. national security priorities and current strategic challenges.
Trump had threatened earlier this week to reduce troop numbers after a row with German Chancellor Merz, who said on Monday that the Iranians were humiliating America in talks aimed at ending the two-month-old war.
Sean Parnell, the chief spokesman for the U.S. Department of Defense, said the troop withdrawal would be completed within the next 6-12 months.
