The US State Department announced that Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi and Foreign Minister Marco Rubio agreed, during their meeting in New York, on the importance of dismantling what it described as “terrorist militias,” preventing attacks launched from Iraqi territory, and enabling Iraq to fully exercise its sovereignty.
The State Department said in an official statement that Rubio met with al-Zaidi on Monday to discuss the future of the partnership between the United States and Iraq.
She added that the two sides “agreed on the importance of Iraq dismantling terrorist militias, preventing attacks from Iraqi territory, and exercising its full sovereignty.”
The meeting was held on the sidelines of Al-Zaidi’s participation in the meetings of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
In contrast, a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Media Office stated that the latter affirmed that his government is working to consolidate Iraqi-American relations and elevate the strategic partnership between the two countries, within a constructive economic cooperation that expands areas of joint work and strengthens mutual interests.
The Prime Minister reiterated his government’s determination to complete what he described as “sovereign entitlements” and to proceed with measures to restrict weapons to the state, in accordance with constitutional and legal principles.
For his part, Rubio, according to the Iraqi statement, expressed his country’s support for Iraq, government and people, in establishing and sustaining internal stability, developing its economy and enhancing its openness to the world, in addition to supporting the government’s steps and decisions aimed at completing the components of the state and consolidating the foundations of stability and economic development.
