Tom Harb, director of the American Middle East Coalition for Democracy and a prominent member of the Republican Party, revealed on Tuesday the outlines of the expected American strategy towards Tehran, stressing that the Iranian regime is now facing an inevitable confrontation with President Donald Trump’s 15 conditions, warning that failure to respond to them will open the door to military operations targeting the Iranian heartland.
Harb explained in a special statement to Shafaq News Agency that the US administration is betting on changing the regime’s behavior, but if Iranian provocations continue, the option of striking the infrastructure will be strongly on the table.
He said: “If the regime does not respond to President Trump’s conditions, targeting the state’s economic and military infrastructure will become a means to force it to submit, which will serve the stability of both Arab states and Israel.”
When asked about warnings from several US legal experts that striking civilian facilities in Iran could amount to “war crimes,” he likened the current situation to what happened in World War II, when the Allies were forced to bomb the infrastructure of major cities to end dictatorial regimes, noting that “deeply rooted ideological” regimes can only be neutralized by ending their operational capabilities.
Harb warned against Iran striking desalination plants or vital facilities in the Gulf states, stressing that such steps would be suicidal for the Iranian regime, which is already suffering from the depletion of its resources.
Harb also downplayed Iranian threats to ignite a “third world war,” saying: “Where is this war? And who will come to Iran’s aid? No one. The prestige of the Iranian military power that they tried to build over 35 years has evaporated, and all that remains for them are inaccurate missiles, while the West and the United States have an arsenal capable of sustaining the war for months and years.”
Regarding the expected duration of any military conflict, Harb indicated that the war might not last more than 60 days, with the possibility of extending it by a decision of Congress for an additional 30 days.
He predicted that bombing the infrastructure would give the Iranian people a “new spirit” to rise up and act against the regime that rules them with a hardline ideological mindset.
Regarding the possibility of closing the Strait of Hormuz, Tom Harb stressed that opening the strait would not be enough to stop American strikes if they began, and that Washington would intensify its military operations to ensure freedom of navigation and eliminate the nuclear program, stressing that the ultimate goal is to end the Iranian threat radically and ensure the security of the region.
