Shafaq News/ The Russian government announced on Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a letter to US envoy Steve Witkoff on Thursday evening to President Donald Trump regarding Washington’s proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the Russian president “conveyed additional information and signals to President Trump through Witkov,” expressing “cautious optimism.”
“When Witkov conveys all the information to President Trump, we will determine the timing of a call” between the Russian and American presidents, Peskov said.
This week, Ukraine agreed to an immediate and unconditional truce under US pressure, on the condition that Russia also adheres to it, which has so far refrained from responding clearly.
Putin expressed reservations on Thursday, stating that he had “serious questions” about Washington’s proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine and expressing Moscow’s willingness to discuss it with US President Donald Trump.
The Russian president affirmed that he “supports” the proposed ceasefire, but that “precise details” remain pending and require communication with the Americans.
“I think we need to talk about these issues with our American partners, and maybe have a phone call with President Trump and discuss it with him,” Putin told reporters.
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky considered the statements made by his Russian counterpart to be “manipulation,” accusing him of procrastination.
Zelenskyy asserted that the lack of an official response from Moscow shows that “Russia is seeking to prolong the war and postpone peace for as long as possible.”
