The spokesman for the Victory Coalition, Salam al-Zubaidi, confirmed on Tuesday that the coordination framework meeting held yesterday discussed extensively the issue of deciding on a candidate for the position of the next prime minister, indicating that the competition between Nouri al-Maliki and Mohammed Shia al-Sudani is still ongoing and has not yet been decided.
Al-Zubaidi told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “the Coordination Framework forces have reduced the list of candidates for the premiership to only four names, two of which have been announced: Nouri al-Maliki, the candidate of the State of Law Coalition, and Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, the candidate of the Reconstruction and Development Alliance,” noting that “the Framework preferred to refrain from revealing the other two names.”
He added that “one of the two unannounced names will be resorted to if a final agreement cannot be reached between Maliki and Sudani,” noting that “the framework meeting held yesterday, Monday, at Sudani’s house witnessed in-depth discussions about the prime ministership file.”
Al-Zubaidi explained that “active and influential forces within the coordination framework sought during the meeting to bring the views of Al-Maliki and Al-Sudani closer, and succeeded in achieving advanced understandings between the two parties, but they have not yet reached a final agreement.”
It is worth noting that the leaders of the Coordination Framework held their 224th regular meeting yesterday, Monday, at the home of Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, where they discussed a number of important issues, including the formation of the government and the selection of the next prime minister.
