US Treasury Secretary Scott Bisent confirmed on Wednesday that the United States is proceeding with tightening sanctions on Iran, vowing to target any entity that deals with or supports the Iranian regime.
In remarks to Fox News, Bessent said his message to everyone is to “stay away from Iran,” stressing that the United States “will cut off every link that connects the Iranian regime to the world” and will target any entity that deals with it.
He added that Washington is currently imposing “unprecedented sanctions” on Iran, noting that the American measures will “strangle the regime.”
Regarding the Iranian economic situation, Besant said that the Iranian president and the speaker of parliament have publicly stated that their country’s economy is facing problems, adding that the Iranian currency has collapsed, inflation has exceeded 100%, and the Iranian authorities are unable to pay the salaries of their forces.
He noted that the United States “will systematically eliminate the bad elements,” indicating that it is conducting “comprehensive talks with everyone who supports Iran.”
The US Secretary of State called on Russia to “abandon its support for the Iranian regime,” explaining that Iranian airlines, the maritime sector, and digital assets could be targets of US sanctions.
Earlier today, Bessent had stated that the collapse of the Iranian economy was “only a matter of time,” and affirmed that Washington would continue to tighten the financial noose around Tehran until it was ready to reach an agreement.
The statements come as part of a broad economic pressure campaign led by President Donald Trump’s administration in parallel with military and naval escalation against Iran, aimed, according to Washington, at limiting Tehran’s ability to access the international financial system and finance its activities.
