US Senator warns of “catastrophic” consequences in Syria due to the “partitioning of Iraq” plan

US Representative Joe Wilson revealed on Wednesday that a previous plan to partition Iraq is being re-introduced in Syria, warning of “catastrophic” repercussions for neighboring countries if implemented.
Wilson wrote on the X platform, “Former US President Joe Biden proposed a plan to divide Iraq into three states 20 years ago, when he was a senator.”
Wilson continued, “The plan was rejected at the time because it would have led to three separate wars, given Iran widespread influence, and provided al-Qaeda with an opportunity to expand.”
He added, “Today, a similar project to divide Syria is being re-proposed. It is an absurd project that will only create unrest extending to Türkiye, Jordan, Iraq, and Israel.”
Wilson believed that “the only option is a unified and stable Syria that embraces all its people and lives in internal and regional peace.”
Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa previously affirmed Syria’s territorial integrity, ruling out the possibility of dividing the country, emphasizing that the factors for partition “are nonexistent and almost impossible in Syria.”
He explained that Syria “faces several challenges, most notably the issue of internal unity. This must be managed in a spirit of understanding, and there is an opportunity to restore Syria’s renaissance.” He emphasized that negative competition for positions “is dangerous and negative.”
Regarding the recent events in Sweida Governorate, Al-Sharaa stressed that the state is committed to holding accountable those who committed violations there.
