Police in Palm Beach, California, said a shooting occurred near the Trump International Golf Club while Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was inside.
“Trump was 300 to 500 yards away when a Secret Service agent engaged a man with a rifle in the bushes inside the Trump Club,” the police chief said.
“The suspect in the Trump shooting left behind an AK-47 rifle and two backpacks containing bulletproof panels,” the commander added.
For its part, the Secret Service said in a statement: “Our units were close to the scene and immediately responded to the incident. We arrested the suspect from inside his vehicle and a witness identified him.”
The agency confirmed that “former President Donald Trump is safe and there was an assassination attempt on him,” noting that “the Republican candidate returned to his resort in Mar-a-Lago after the shooting incident on the golf course.”
