On her last day in office, US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced the release of previously undisclosed correspondence and documents accusing Anthony Fauci, then head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), of working with politically motivated elements within the intelligence community to conceal the true origin of the coronavirus and influence intelligence assessments related to the pandemic.
Gabbard stated that the documents show Dr. Anthony Fauci used millions of dollars of US taxpayer money to fund dangerous research in exchange for positions at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China.
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence said in a statement that Fauci, while heading the NIAID, funded research on bat coronaviruses at the Wuhan Institute, research now widely considered the likely source of the laboratory leak that led to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Gabbard added that the documents reveal what she described as Fauci’s direct role in influencing the intelligence community’s assessments of the virus’s origin, as well as his work with officials within the intelligence community to suppress information related to the virus’s laboratory origins.
She also accused him of lying to Congress during his sworn testimony in 2024 when he denied knowing about or participating in discussions with intelligence officials regarding viral research.
Gabbard stated, “After years of lies, censorship, and cover-ups, the American people deserve transparency, truth, and accountability,” adding that the documents reveal how information related to the origin of the pandemic was concealed and intelligence was manipulated.
According to the statement, the documents resulted from a year-long declassification review that included gathering testimonies from numerous whistleblowers within the intelligence community.
The testimonies, the statement said, indicated that analysts and officials who challenged official conclusions regarding the virus’s origin were marginalized and threatened with retaliatory measures that impacted their careers.
The statement accused Fauci of playing three key roles during the pandemic: funding high-risk research related to developing what he termed “universal vaccines,” working behind the scenes to push the intelligence community toward adopting the natural origin hypothesis, and publicly appearing as the pandemic’s most prominent commentator.
The statement also noted that a review of hundreds of emails showed that the intelligence community largely followed Fauci’s recommendations, and that scientists funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases were involved in advising US intelligence on the origin of the virus.
