The economic advisor at the US Embassy in Baghdad, Eric Camus, confirmed on Sunday that Iraq is now safer than in previous years, but he pointed out that the presence of armed factions and the lack of accountability for their attacks is pushing investment elsewhere.

“Iraq today is much more secure and stable than it was during my first tour here 15 years ago,” Camus said during a panel discussion at the Iraq Investment Forum, attended by a Shafaq News Agency correspondent.

“However, the fact that armed groups linked to a foreign power can kidnap, carry out drone strikes, and even attack government officials with little accountability is driving investments elsewhere,” he added, explaining that “security is not just about safety on the streets, but also about expectations and accountability under the law.”

He continued, “The more Iraq strengthens the rule of law, protects its institutions, and holds accountable those who use violence, the more attractive it will become as a place to do business.”

He stated, “We are committed to supporting Iraq, providing international support for investment opportunities for foreign companies, and protecting businessmen and investors to ensure the success of their work in Iraq.”
