U.S. sends disaster response team to Iraq

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) said in Washington on Monday that Government had sent a disaster assistance response team to help coordinate the humanitarian aid being sent to Iraq.
Rajiv Shah, Director of USAID, said the team would work with local officials, the international community and humanitarian relief organisations to identify humanitarian needs and speed up the response.
“The situation is extremely dire for the tens of thousands of innocent people in northern and central Iraq under assault by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’’, he said.
He said working in support of the Government of Iraq; government would provide humanitarian aid to those in need and trapped on Mount Sinjar without food, water, and shelter.
