Turkish Undersecretary of Energy Ahmet Gunkar stressed on Saturday the need for cooperation with Iraq in the oil and renewable energy sectors, noting that Iraq is one of the region’s most important oil players, and that no country can abandon its neighbors.
“The economy is developing and growing according to demand, and energy consumption in Turkey has doubled, with demand increasing by more than 120,000 megawatts,” Junkar said in a speech during a dialogue session on the sidelines of the Baghdad Forum, attended by a Shafaq News Agency correspondent. He indicated that “renewable energy accounted for 61% of the installed capacity by the end of July, and 73% of the energy comes from renewable sources.”
He added, “Turkey has an oil pipeline with Iraq, as well as with Iran, and other energy pipelines with many countries,” stressing that “Turkey supports regional cooperation and working with neighboring countries, including Iraq and Iran, communicating with them and building clean energy, because no country can operate in isolation from its neighbors.”
He stressed that “Türkiye continues to work closely with neighboring countries, and that Iraq is one of the most important players in providing crude oil, and we must cooperate with it to provide natural gas, renewable energy, and oil.”
He explained that “Turkey aims to benefit from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, and we are working on this through the private sector,” noting that “oil and natural gas are essential and important, and renewable energy has a fundamental supporting role, but oil remains a key point.”
He explained that “Türkiye has made exceptional efforts to develop its energy security, and that the oil fields in southern Türkiye produce 80,000 barrels per day, and will soon reach 100,000 barrels per day.”
“We are in contact with the global market and have key points and a balance to be struck. We emphasize diversifying energy sources, but we must consider priorities more,” Junkar continued.
He concluded by saying, “Local resources must be linked to the market and diversified to protect citizens from risks. We have created the appropriate conditions for Turkey to achieve its national goals.”
