Reuters quoted White House officials on Saturday as saying that US President Donald Trump told his aides he wanted to avoid an “endless war” with Iran, while seeking a negotiated solution, while also threatening a major military escalation if talks failed.
A White House official said Trump told his aides he wanted to avoid a long war, and urged them to emphasize that the duration of hostilities could be between four and six weeks.
He added that Trump threatened a major military escalation if talks with Iran failed.
The official noted that Trump is “prepared to listen to Iran, but if they fail, they will be hit harder than ever before.”
Reuters quoted another White House official as saying that the campaign against Iran “will end when Trump decides that our objectives have been achieved.”
A White House official also clarified that Trump is not planning to send ground troops, but is “putting all options on the table.”
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had previously confirmed that his country had been subjected to “two acts of aggression” during the negotiation period, pointing to the continued targeting of energy infrastructure despite American promises, and warning of Israel’s attempt to expand the circle of war in the region.
Pezeshkian also praised Pakistan’s mediation efforts, coinciding with diplomatic moves led by Islamabad and regional talks to reduce tensions.
