US President Donald Trump announced on Friday afternoon that he had agreed to Iran’s request to continue “talks”.
Trump added in a post on the Truth Social platform, which was monitored by Shafaq News Agency: “But the United States informed them in no uncertain terms that the ceasefire has ended.”
Reuters quoted a source it described as well-informed as saying on Friday that Qatari negotiators were in Tehran to meet with Iranian officials in an attempt to ease tensions and create conditions for the resumption of broader negotiations.
The source added that “the talks are being held in coordination with the United States,” noting that they “aim to address the issue of implementing the US-Iranian memorandum of understanding and the issues that led to the latest wave of escalation between Washington and Tehran, including disputes related to navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.”
In this context, a British maritime authority said on Friday that the security threat level in the Strait of Hormuz remains high, calling on sailors to exercise extreme caution and remain aware of mine-risk areas while crossing.
According to ship-tracking data, tanker traffic through the strait came to a near standstill on Thursday as ship owners assessed the risks stemming from the latest attacks, which began after Iran targeted a Qatari liquefied natural gas tanker leaving the waterway near Oman.
Iranian armed forces launched attacks on US military infrastructure in Gulf states on Thursday, following US strikes on coastal areas in southern and eastern Iran, further straining a ceasefire reached three weeks ago.
Two Israeli sources told CNN on Friday that the administration of US President Donald Trump does not want to involve Israel in a military confrontation with Iran, fearing a loss of control over the escalation, after the recent tension that threatened to collapse the ceasefire agreement.
