US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday the start of clearing the Strait of Hormuz of mines, while stressing that the clearing is a service to countries including China, Japan, South Korea, France and Germany.
Trump said that Iran’s navy and air force had disappeared and its anti-aircraft systems were virtually nonexistent, indicating that Iran’s missile and drone factories had been largely destroyed and, most importantly, that “its leaders were killed.”
He added that Iran’s only card at the moment is “the threat that one of the ships might collide with its sea mines.”
Earlier on Saturday, the American news website Axios reported that US Navy ships had passed through the Strait of Hormuz.
Shipping data and media reports showed movements of ships and oil tankers towards the Strait of Hormuz, ahead of the start of negotiations between America and Iran in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.
CNN reported that “a number of ships began heading towards the Strait of Hormuz as talks began, amid cautious monitoring by international parties.”
These moves come amid a tense regional atmosphere as the outcome of the negotiations taking place in Islamabad is awaited. These negotiations include several issues, most notably Tehran’s condition that the talks begin with American pledges that include a ceasefire in Lebanon and the lifting of sanctions imposed on it.
