US President Donald Trump confirmed on Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz remains open to shipping, after Iran claimed to have closed the waterway.
Trump wrote in a brief post on the Truth Social platform that “the Strait of Hormuz is open,” adding that “the United States has dealt severe blows to Iran,” referring to the recent strikes carried out by US forces.
The US Central Command announced earlier on Sunday that more than 140 ships had passed through the Strait of Hormuz in the past seven days, confirming that navigation continues and that the strait is open to ships.
She added that the strait is open to all ships wishing to legally cross the international waterway, and that her forces are “positioned and ready to ensure continued freedom of navigation despite Iran’s unjustified aggression.”
In response, the Iranian authority managing the Strait of Hormuz announced that passage through the strait is currently impossible due to “illegal American actions,” stressing that transit requests will be reviewed and the necessary permits will be issued as soon as stability and calm are restored.
