US President Donald Trump warned on Wednesday that any potential military confrontation with Iran would be “much worse” than before, stressing that the US fleet heading to the region would carry out its mission forcefully and swiftly if necessary.
Al-Hadath quoted Trump as saying that “Iran must make a deal and not allow a repeat of the previous attack,” stressing that “Washington wants a fair deal with Iran that is in everyone’s interest, but he emphasized at the same time that any agreement must include a basic condition, which is that Iran does not possess nuclear weapons.”
Trump added, directing a message to Tehran: “As I said before, make a deal now or expect massive destruction,” noting that “the force being sent to Iran is greater than what was sent to Venezuela.”
The US president confirmed that “a huge fleet is moving quickly towards Iran,” expressing his hope that “Iran will sit down at the negotiating table,” in light of escalating regional tensions and US military movements in the region.
Tensions between Washington and Tehran have escalated in recent weeks against the backdrop of protests inside Iran.
Trump had warned Tehran against continuing to “kill protesters,” hinting at the possibility of intervention, before indicating last week that Iran “wants to talk,” opening the door to a possible diplomatic path.
In response, Iran escalated its rhetoric, warning that any American attack would be met with a response that could destabilize the entire region.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei said that “Tehran is fully capable of responding to any aggression,” stressing that “the Iranian armed forces are constantly monitoring developments.”
