US President Donald Trump confirmed on Thursday that Iran had contacted the United States and expressed its desire to reach an agreement, amid escalating military tensions between the two countries.
Trump had repeated the same position hours earlier, during his return flight from Ankara on the US presidential plane.
Trump said in remarks he made after leaving Turkey that the United States had “received a call from Iran,” stressing that Tehran was “very keen to reach a settlement deal” and had informed Washington of its desire to reach an agreement.
In this context, informed officials reported that Trump left Turkey on the current US presidential plane (Air Force One), instead of the new Boeing 747-8 that the United States obtained from Qatar, as a precautionary measure coinciding with the renewed military confrontation with Iran.
Trump’s remarks come after the US military announced on Thursday the end of a new round of strikes against Iran targeting about 90 military sites along the Iranian coast, which it said were aimed at undermining Tehran’s ability to threaten navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
In response, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced that it had targeted US military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait in retaliation for the US strikes, while the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, warned Washington against continuing the escalation, stressing that any US attack “will be met with a similar response.”
