US President Donald Trump suspended the “Green Card” lottery program, which caused shock among the winners of this year’s lottery.
The decision came because this program allowed the suspect in the Brown University and MIT shootings to enter the United States.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said that, at Trump’s direction, she is ordering U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to temporarily halt the program.
She added: “This heinous individual should never have been allowed to enter our country.”
The Diversity Visa Program provides up to 50,000 Green Cards each year by lottery to people from countries with minimal representation in the United States, many of them in Africa.
Nearly 20 million people applied for the 2025 visa lottery, and more than 131,000 were selected when couples were counted with the winners.
