US President Donald Trump confirmed that he suggested to Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud that he “re-appoint” Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar following her controversial remarks about the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
According to Trump, speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, the response was surprising: “He told me he didn’t want it.”
The scathing remarks came days after Omar, a Minnesota congresswoman, made a series of remarks that conservative circles described as “hateful and hateful” toward Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, who was shot and killed during an event in Utah.
High-ranking officials, including the Vice President and the FBI Director, have endorsed Trump’s comment.
In response to the incident, Omar criticized what she described as “the high level of appreciation the man received after his death,” saying his “speech was filled with hate.”
The controversy escalated when she later launched a scathing attack on Democrats and celebrities on Twitter, accusing them of “normalizing Kirk’s image,” describing him as a “despicable human being and a random terrorist.”
Omar did not back down from her position, but rather defended it in a television interview, saying that she would not “honor the legacy of a man who should be consigned to the dustbin of history.” This escalation prompted some Republican lawmakers to move to formally censure her for “celebrating murder,” but the attempt failed.
Meanwhile, renowned golfer Phil Mickelson joined the debate, calling on the X platform for Omar’s return to Somalia and accusing her of “spreading hatred and fraudulently entering the country.”
Mickelson was responding to a video in which she described Omar Kirk as “Dr. Frankenstein who was killed by his own monster,” referring to the suspect in the incident.
The suspect in the killing is a 22-year-old man who reportedly harbors “left-wing ideologies.” He has been charged with aggravated murder.
