US President Donald Trump said he sent a letter to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei expressing his desire to negotiate over Iran’s nuclear file. The US president said he wants to negotiate over the nuclear weapons program with Iran and sent a letter to Tehran yesterday, Thursday, saying he hopes it will negotiate.
“Something has to be done about Iran to prevent them from getting a nuclear weapon, and that’s why I prefer to reach an agreement with them and I sent a message to Khamenei yesterday (Thursday),” he added.
In early January, Trump signed a memorandum on restoring the policy of “maximum pressure” towards Iran, which includes attempts to reduce its oil exports to zero in order to prevent it from possessing a nuclear weapon.
In contrast, in late January, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that his country saw no chance of resuming negotiations with the United States as long as Washington continued to speak in the language of threats and pressure.
For his part, Supreme Leader Sayyed Ali Khamenei said that experience has proven that holding talks with the United States is a step that is “not smart, wise or honorable.”
