US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the United States has large quantities of ammunition, asserting that his country is building the largest number of ammunition factories in its history.
Trump added that his administration would seek prison sentences for those who leaked what he called “treasonous statements”.
Earlier today, the White House denied a Washington Post report that said US President Donald Trump was growing increasingly frustrated with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over ammunition shortages, asserting that the report was “incorrect”.
The Washington Post quoted informed sources as saying that Trump asked Hegseth for clarifications regarding the decline in ammunition stockpiles, particularly long-range missiles and air defense systems, and the impact of this on US military options toward Iran.
According to the newspaper, the US president’s frustration with the Secretary of War increased after it became clear that the shortage of ammunition limited the United States’ ability to carry out large-scale military operations against Iran.
The report added that Trump believed the ammunition stockpile problem had been resolved, before discovering during internal discussions that the shortage still existed, which led to tension within the administration regarding the readiness of the US military.
In contrast, the White House rejected this account, denying any disagreement between Trump and Hegseth regarding the management of the military file or ammunition stockpiles. The Secretary of Defense also denied the validity of reports that spoke of a confrontation or reprimand from the President.
These reports come at a time when the debate continues within the United States about the amount of munitions used during the war with Iran, amid warnings from members of Congress about the impact on US military stockpiles.
