US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the Strait of Hormuz will remain open to international shipping, with the exception of Iranian vessels, while confirming a complete blockade on ships heading to or departing from Iranian ports.
Trump said in press statements that “his administration decided to replace the 20% tariffs with trade and investment deals that the Gulf states will conclude with the United States, as part of strengthening economic partnerships between the two sides.”
He added that “oil is flowing today in unprecedented abundance thanks to the enormous power of the American army,” considering that “American measures have contributed to ensuring the security of energy supplies and navigation in the region.”
A U.S. official confirmed earlier on Tuesday that the United States had deployed 19 warships to the Middle East, a move that gives it significant firepower and military presence to enforce the naval blockade imposed on Iran, according to the Washington Post.
During the previous blockade period, the US Navy intercepted or forced to turn back more than 140 merchant ships, and fired on the engine rooms of 9 ships to disable them after they refused to comply.
These developments come after US President Donald Trump announced the resumption of military operations against Iran and the reimposition of a naval blockade, coinciding with escalating confrontations between the two sides.
