Trump raises global tariffs to 15%

US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he was raising global tariffs from 10 to 15 percent.
Trump said in a tweet on his Truth Social account: “Based on a thorough, detailed and complete review of the ridiculous, poorly worded and blatantly anti-American decision on tariffs issued yesterday by the United States Supreme Court.”
He added: “After many months of reflection, please consider this statement as a declaration from me, as President of the United States of America, that I will, effective immediately, raise the 10% global tariffs on countries that have taken advantage of the United States for decades with impunity (until I took over!) to the legally permissible level of 15 % .”
He continued: “Over the next few months, the Trump administration will determine the new, legally permissible tariffs that will continue our very successful journey of making America great again – greater than ever before! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
Trump strongly criticized the Supreme Court’s recent decision to cancel the tariffs, describing it as “very disappointing” and “ridiculous,” but at the same time he stressed that he had alternative options .
He said on Friday that the tariffs were primarily a “national security” issue, noting that he had imposed them mainly “to make America great again .”
Earlier on Friday, the US Supreme Court struck down Trump’s sweeping tariffs, inflicting a major blow on a crucial issue in his economic agenda .
The decision, which came with the support of 6 judges and the rejection of 3, focuses on the tariffs imposed under the Emergency Powers Act, including the sweeping “reciprocal” tariffs that he imposed on almost all countries .
The majority concluded that the Constitution “very clearly” grants Congress the power to levy taxes, including tariffs. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote, “The framers of the Constitution did not grant any part of the tax-making powers to the executive branch .”
In a memorandum objecting to the decision, Judge Brett Kavanaugh wrote: “The tariffs in question may or may not be a wise policy. But as far as the text, the history, and the precedent are concerned, they are clearly lawful .”
The majority did not discuss whether companies could recover the billions they collectively paid in customs duties.
