Shafaq News/ Political officials revealed that they nominated US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize this year, while the Norwegian Nobel Institute announced that the number of candidates for this prestigious award reached 338, including 244 individuals and 94 institutions.
Although the prize committee is usually tight-lipped about nominees — the Nobel Prize rules require that the identity of nominees remain confidential for 50 years — those eligible to nominate — including former laureates, lawmakers, ministers and some university professors — are free to reveal the name of the person or institution they have proposed.
US Congressman Darrell Issa announced last Monday in a post on the X platform that he would nominate Trump for the award, adding, “No one deserves it more than him.”
US media later quoted Issa’s office as saying the nomination was driven by Trump’s approach to the Middle East.
Issa’s application will be submitted after the nomination deadline, but Ukrainian parliamentarian Oleksandr Merezhko also nominated Trump in November in a move to attract the attention of the then-president-elect, according to Ukrainian media.
Trump’s name has been mentioned as a candidate in previous years as well, but this year’s nomination will be particularly eye-catching.
Trump has stirred controversy by starting talks with Moscow over the war in Ukraine and alarmed European allies by introducing changes to U.S. foreign policy.
He also proposed taking control of the Gaza Strip and displacing its 2.4 million residents, an idea that drew widespread condemnation around the world.
Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Nihon Hidankyo group of Japanese atomic bomb survivors for its efforts to ban nuclear weapons.
