US President Donald Trump used the occasion of Christmas to launch a sharp attack on his Democratic opponents, describing them as “the scum of the radical left.”
The Republican president spent the day before Christmas at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, where he participated with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) in calls tracking Santa Claus’s journey from the North Pole, before extending greetings to American troops deployed around the world.
However, Trump did not show the same goodwill towards his Democratic rivals, writing in a post on his social media platform “Truth Social”: “Merry Christmas to all, including the scum of the radical left who are doing everything they can to destroy our country, but are failing miserably.”
He added: “We no longer have open borders, no men participating in women’s sports, no rights for transgender people, and no weakness in law enforcement. What we have is a record stock market and retirement savings plans, the lowest crime rates in decades, zero inflation, and yesterday, GDP growth of 4.3%, two points higher than expected.”
Trump launched a scathing attack on the opposition, which has criticized his administration’s handling of the cost of living, a day after the Commerce Department released data showing economic growth of 4.3% in the third quarter, the highest GDP growth rate in two years.
However, the report also noted that the domestic purchase price index rose by 3.4%, a much higher inflation rate compared to the 2.0% recorded in the second quarter.
In the week before Christmas, Democrats criticized the Justice Department for delaying the release of thousands of records related to the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender who was a friend of Trump.
Trump also extended holiday greetings to U.S. forces deployed around the world, including those involved in the U.S. naval buildup in the Caribbean, where Washington is pressuring Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to step down.
