The Wall Street Journal, citing US officials, revealed on Thursday that President Donald Trump supports the idea of declaring an end to the war with Iran, coinciding with US military preparations for the possibility that the conflict could continue into next year.
According to the newspaper, Trump is discussing with his top aides the possibility of declaring an end to the war, while he believes that continuing economic pressure could ultimately push the Iranian regime to dismantle its nuclear program or collapse.
Earlier, Trump said that the United States had “destroyed a large part of Iran’s military capabilities,” adding that achieving victory was “only a matter of time.”
In contrast to this trend, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is working to extend the deployment periods of U.S. forces in the Middle East until 2027, according to people familiar with the matter, in a move that reflects keeping military options open.
The data reported by the newspaper indicates the presence of about 50,000 American soldiers in the region, along with 19 warships, including two aircraft carriers and 13 guided-missile destroyers.
This comes at a time when confrontations between the United States and Iran continue, amid mutual strikes and escalating tension around the Strait of Hormuz, while Washington faces two parallel options: declaring the end of the war and moving to economic pressure, or maintaining a military presence in anticipation of continued fighting.
The war between the United States and Iran broke out in February 2016 and has continued ever since, marked by reciprocal strikes and tensions related to the Strait of Hormuz. Attempts to reach a ceasefire have been made, but these attempts have not prevented renewed escalation.
