The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on Sunday that US President Donald Trump is finalizing a comprehensive deal with Syria regarding security understandings with Israel and Damascus joining the Abraham Accords.
The Hebrew newspaper noted that “this deal, which is still under final negotiation, is part of American efforts to promote stability in Syria by integrating it into a broader regional security framework, including its participation in the international coalition against ISIS, and the normalization of its relations with Israel through an indirect mechanism managed by American mediation.”
In contrast, the Syrian government, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, seeks to lift the American and European sanctions imposed on the country as a prerequisite for implementing any normalization, with the aim of opening the door to the flow of foreign investments and the start of major reconstruction projects.
These developments coincide with President al-Sharaa’s arrival in the United States on Sunday morning, on an official visit that is the first of its kind for a Syrian president to Washington in decades, and his second visit to the United States after his participation in the United Nations General Assembly in New York last month, where he became the first Syrian president to address the international organization since 1967.
Presidents Trump and al-Sharaa are expected to meet at the White House, in a meeting seen as a pivotal moment in the course of Syrian diplomatic transformation, although the exact details of the deal have not yet been officially revealed and are still subject to negotiation and coordination between the parties.
